Lower Downgate, Cornwall

Contract value: £155,000

Completed: 2009

The owners of a converted Chapel and Schoolhouse near Callington approached McCaren Architecture for some advice on how to adapt the building to best meet the needs of their young family.  An unimaginative original conversion, undertaken in the 1980s, had not maximised space or the dramatic impact of the building.

Our replanning gave the schoolhouse a magnificent double-height family room, a remodelled kitchen / living space, and two new bedrooms, all sensitively detailed in oak, natural stone and slate.

“Thanks very much for all your guidance and ideas over the length of our project. We can’t imagine that without your attention to ideas and details that we would have ended the project never mind ended up with such an excellent outcome. Your time, personal approach and professional engagement has been immensely appreciated.”

Mike Murphy, owner The Old Chapel, January 2010
