When Cornwall Council became a unitary authority in 2008 the council created twenty-three One Stop Shops across the county to provide a local access point for information about council services. McCaren Access were appointed to carry out Access Audits for these new facilities to ensure that they would be accessible to all. Alongside this commission McCaren Interiors were appointed to produce a strategy for interior finishes that would complement the new corporate branding of the unitary authority.
Access Audits for each of the premises were undertaken on the basis of drawings produced by project architects Kendall Kingscott. Reports were presented in a checklist format following the guidance published by the Centre for Accessible Environments. Advice on suggested access improvements was then adopted into the scheme by the architects and Contractor.
Working with the product range of the Council’s preferred furniture supplier (Kinnarps), McCaren Interiors prepared mood boards for surface finishes, upholstery, carpets and flooring that would harmonise with the colours of the new Cornwall Council logo. Achieving good contrast between adjacent surfaces to aid navigation for the visually impaired was a key requirement of the scheme.
